Alexandra Kay organized a very special surprise for all the fans that came out to her headline show in Chattanooga, TN on March 1. In the midst of her set, she welcomed the one and only, Jo Dee Messina to the stage to join her in singing the iconic country hit, “Heads Carolina, Heads California.”
Following the concert, both of the female singer/songwriters took to social media to recap the special moment that found them performing to over 1,000 screaming fans.
“Last night was so fun!” Messina wrote.
Plotting The Surprise
While speaking with Country Now about her current Cupid’s A Cowgirl headlining tour, Kay revealed how she was able to pull off this unforgettable surprise for her loyal listeners. It turns out that the pair have had a close relationship for a few years now that continued grow stronger the more and more they ran into each other at festivals. From there, they kept in contact, started to open up about their lives while hanging out in their free time and have even written together.
“I grew up listening to her. I’ve idolized her since I was a kid, and we met a couple of years ago when I was opening for her, and we’ve just stayed in touch ever since. She’s been such a great mentor to me, and we write songs together, and like I said, she’s just wonderful,” Kay explained.
So knowing that her close friends was just a bus ride away from her concert, Kay decided to call up Messina and ask her if she would help deliver her signature hit.
“I texted her the day before and I was like, Jo Dee, I know that you have a life and you probably can’t do this, but I am in Chattanooga tomorrow. If you’re anywhere near here and you want to hop up and surprise the crowd, they would lose their minds. And she was like, ‘yeah, my son has soccer practice at this point. I think I can swing it at this time.’ She literally jumped on her bus and drove to Chattanooga that night just to sing that one song and surprise the crowd and to watch some of my show,” Kay shared with great pride for her fellow songstress.
“That’s just a true testament to who she is, and she’s really been walking with me in my faith and keeping God in my life, and she’s just really, really wonderful. I’m so happy to have her in my life.”
Seeing The Fans Go Crazy
For anyone who wasn’t lucky enough to be present for this epic performance, the Illinois native made it clear that it turned out better than she could have imagined. A select group of fans who use her new The Alexandra Kay App were given a clue as to who the surprise guest would be, and while she said many guessed correctly, the room still appeared to be incredibly shocked by Messina’s appearance.
“I’ve never heard the crowd so loud in my life. They lost their minds,” she shared. “I had put a teaser riddle in the app for people to guess who it was, and a lot of people guessed her. So I think that because people know that we have a relationship, some people already knew, but they fooled me. I mean, it sounded like they had no idea, and they were so surprised, so excited. There’s videos all over social media of it.”
Kay further emphasized just how much of a professional Jo Dee Messina is when she noted that the country star was experiencing a technical issue with her in-ears as soon as she walked on stage. However, that small hiccup didn’t seem to faze her in the slightest as the “I’m Alright” singer still managed to deliver an epic performance.
“What’s crazy is it’s Jo Dee’s voice is so iconic that I could tell that there was something wrong with her in-ears when she first ran out and she was still singing perfectly on pitch. She sounded incredible. And I was just like, ‘oh my gosh, you’re an icon,’” Kay gushed.

This likely won’t be the last time fans see them sharing the stage, as Kay hinted at more performances together, and possibly even a collaboration in the future.
“I want to release this song together, but I want it to be the right song, the perfect song. I want it to be like a ‘90s country feeling lifting up femininity, you know what I’m saying? Lifting up women in country. That’s what I want it to be, So we’ll see,” she teased.
