RaeLynn’s very first radio single of 2012, “Boyfriend,” has resurfaced online and fans are just now realizing they have been singing the lyrics wrong for years.
Once she started to notice the song gaining traction on TikTok, the songstress joined in on the fun by adding the track to her videos and duetting users’ clips. While RaeLynn was clearly excited to see the heartbreaking, mid-tempo tune being used to soundtrack heartfelt videos all these years later, she still wanted to call out the lyrical mix-up and set the record straight.

The storyline finds her admitting to a girl that she wants to steal her boyfriend for herself. She recalls some of her early memories with the love interest and lays out all the reasons why she believes they should be together. However, she puts her feelings to the side and assures the girl, “I won’t take him cause I ain’t that low.”
In the first line of the second verse, she thinks back to a trip she took with the boy and the memories they made along the way. The Texas native sings, “First time we heard Shania Twain I think we were on our way to Lubbock.”
This is where fans are getting it wrong. Instead of hearing “Lubbock,” the name of a city in Texas, many have believed that RaeLynn is actually singing “lovebug.”
“POV: It’s 11 years later and a drama breakup song I wrote at 17 is trending and everyone thinks I said LoveBug and not Lubbock,” she wrote in a video on TikTok. In the caption of the same post, she asks “Should we change it to lovebug? 😂💕❤️”

After seeing RaeLynn reveal the truth, the comment section was filled with mixed responses. Some users admitted that they have been singing it wrong this whole time while others were confident in knowing that it was Lubbock all along.
One user said, “The real OG’s KNOW you said Lubbock!!💖”
“Whatttt no I always knew it was Lubbock 😂,” added another.
Others left remarks like, “Omg I’ve always thought it was love bug 😅😅😅” and “The way I used to scream Lovebug every time this came on 😭”
In her latest video, she’s informed of yet another alternate version that listeners could be hearing, which in her opinion, “makes more sense” than “lovebug.” Instead of what most listeners throught, which was “we were on our way to lovebug,” the woman beside her admitted to thinking it was actually, “we were on our way in a lovebug,” referencing a Volkswagen Beetle car.
“Here we come in a LOVEBUG 😂❤️💕,” she jokingly wrote in the caption.

Despite the innocent mix-up, RaeLynn seems to just be having fun see this song take on a new life.
“Boyfriend” evolved from a co-write between RaeLynn and her fellow The Voice contestants, Nicolle Galyon and Hailey Steele and impacted airwaves shortly after her time on Season 2 of the singing competition came to an end. She later returned to the show to debut her first single.
“I’m nervous, because it’s my debut single,” she told The Boot at the time. “But I’m also super excited, because on the show (last season) I got to show my rock-country side but I didn’t get to show my original stuff. So it’s going to be so cool to sing a song that I wrote and really showcase who I am as an artist.”
RaeLynn’s career has come a long way since being on The Voice at just 17 years old. She recently looked back on this chapter of her life and used one particular performance as a way to inspire her fans to keep pursuing their dreams, no matter how impossible it may feel.
The Instagram post included a video of her singing “She’s Country” by Jason Aldean. This video has now come full circle as Raelynn is gearing up to open for Aldean’s 2025 headlining tour.
“At 17 years old I sang one of my favorite country songs “she’s country” on @nbcthevoice by @jasonaldean,” she wrote. “Here is your sign that anything is possible and also I want to thank all my fans personally for following my journey as performer and singer, your girl was learning how to do it all on a national stage and thank you Jesus for the GLOW UP VOCALLY but I did keep some of the moves 😂 NOW LETS GO ON TOUR WITH JASON ALDEAN!!”
This trek kicks off in May and runs through the fall. In addition to serving as a special guest on this tour, RaeLynn was recently announced as a performer for 2025’s Watershed Music Festival taking place this April.
