Luke Combs’ cover of *“Fast Car”* has been a massive success in country music, and it’s no secret that he’s always admired Tracy Chapman and her work. In fact, his goal in recording the song was simply to do it justice and make Tracy proud. But as it turns out, there was one small hiccup that he didn’t realize until Tracy herself brought it up.
At a recent concert, Luke shared the moment Tracy asked him why he changed one of her lyrics. Instead of saying “We gotta make a decision,” Luke recorded the line as “Still gotta make a decision.” At the time, Luke had no idea he’d made a mistake.
He recalled the moment, saying, “And that was the first time that I knew that I recorded the song incorrectly. Because I remember when she said it, I wanted to crawl in a hole.”
Fortunately, Tracy took it all in stride, and Luke says she was “awesome” about the whole thing. But for him, it’s something he’ll always remember, and he admits he thinks about it every time he sings the song.
At the concert, he wrapped up his story by telling the crowd, “So tonight I will probably sing ‘We gotta make a decision,’ because Tracy Chapman told me to… and dammit, I’m gonna do it.”
