AAA Predicts Rough Year for Thanksgiving Travel

AAA just put out its annual Thanksgiving travel forecast, and it’s safe to say that there will be a lot of people on the roads and in the skies. They’re predicting 55.4 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving this year.  That makes the third most Thanksgiving travelers since 2000, and a 2.3% increase over last year’s numbers.

Out of those numbers, 49 million will drive, 4.7 million will fly . . . and 1.6 million will get where they’re going another way (whether that’s bus, train, or ferry).

AAA is also reporting that Tuesday and Wednesday are the worst travel days to depart, and the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the worst day to head home. A little bit of good news: the average price for gas across the US is a little bit cheaper than Thanksgiving 2022.

For Hampton Roads- hopefully this means tunnel traffic won’t be too brutal during Thanksgiving week! But better to be safe and leave extra early for any travels.
